SAN ANTONIO REGION MEETING NOTES, FEBRUARY 5, 2010

Greg Garcia, Marc Garcia, Robert Gonzales, Leonard Hernandez, Francisco Maldonado, Henry Ortega, Bob Perez, David Reta, and Jose Ventura attended the meeting at the PSC on Friday, 5 February 2010.

Jose led a discussion on our proposed 2010 budget for our Region. It appears, when we receive a check from AT&T for $11,640 at our next meeting on 5 March, we will have $13,615.96 in the bank. We propose to (1) award fifty $155 Fish Camp scholarships in August for a total of $7750; (2) award ten $50 Wal-Mart gift cards at the PSC tailgate in April for a total of $500; (3) donate $900 to sponsor a table and contribute door prizes in support of the San Antonio A&M Club fund-raiser in September; and (4) donate $1850 to CAMAC to support SCOLA; leaving a reserve of $2615.96. Note that except for our contribution to the San Antonio A&M Club, all of our funds are spent on directly assisting students and not on ourselves. Unlike other organizations, we have no administrative costs, such as office supplies, postage, newsletter, website, and food/beverages for our meetings and parties.

So far, Jose has signed 485 letters to Hispanic students in our Region who have been accepted to Texas A&M. All of them are top 10% students. 15 January was the deadline for submitting an application.

Polo Cervantes, Jose, Henry, Bob, and Robert participated in Phone-a-Fish Sunday evening, 31 January at the PSC. Approximately 100 students were called. Unfortunately, over 300 were not because we did not have enough callers. The next Phone-a-Fish is Sunday evening, 21 February. We need at least 12 callers to man 12 phones instead of just 5 callers and 7 empty phone stations.

The PSC will take 25 Hispanic students and one of their parents on a free bus trip to A&M on Saturday, 20 February, for Aggieland Saturday.

LTG Van Alstyne resigned as Commandant this past week, effective later this month. We hope to support BG Joe Ramirez, Class of 1979, currently on active duty in the US Army, as his replacement.

Francisco will host a Regional Chairs meeting on 12-13 February here in San Antonio before meeting with A&M President R. Bowen Loftin on 15 February.

Three students from CAMAC, Sarah Rodriguez, Hector Casarez, and David Galnares, briefed about SCOLA and solicited a contribution from us (which we intended to support already – see item 1 above).
