SAN ANTONIO REGION MEETING NOTES, NOVEMBER 6, 2009

We met at the PSC, 7am. Those present were: David Reta, Henry Ortega, Carlos Flores, Jesse Garza, Laurie Castillo, Janie Alcala, Veronica Blanco, and Jose Ventura. Veronica Blanco is the new PSC financial student aid counselor. She came to San Antonio from the Corpus Christi office.

Jose began the meeting by making a correction as to when we will have our Christmas Social. Originally, Jose said it was on Dec 17th but the correct date is December 16th at Aggie Park. We will host this event and invite those Hispanic seniors that have been accepted to TAMU and those FISH that are home for the holidays and we want to retain. This is the first year we will try this type of event. You will be receiving invitations in the near future.

Laurie reported that as of October 30th TAMU, across the board, was ahead in applications received and letters of acceptance sent to seniors; to include Hispanic applicants. Jose has requested that TAMHN-State Chair make contact with TAMU Office of Admissions and Records and ask them to release the acceptance list. The sooner we (TAMHN-SA) make contact with these accepted Hiospanic students the better chance we have recruiting them for TAMU.

Tomorrow is Aggie S.A. at Holmes H.S. (410 and Ingram Rd.). TAMU and the PSC will host this annual event. Todate the PSC has received over 320 RSVPs. This is more than previous years. Jose will attend and he is asking for at least 4 more volunteers. We will walk around and talk with the Hispanic students and their parents. The event begins at 11 am and will end no later than 3pm. We hope to see some of you there to support Jose.

On October 23th the PSC took 22 prospects with a parent each to Aggieland. The majority of the prospects were those elgible for Century Scholarships. These are young men and women from the San Antonio, Edgewood, Harlandale, Southside, and Southeast school districts. It was reported that the PSC received good support from the Campus reps.

Jose reminded the team about the San Antonio Aggie Club's Annual Business Meeting this coming Monday, starting at 6pm. Several agenda items will be conducted; 'State of the Club' address, presentation of the first ever audit report, and the elections for next year's Officers and Board. A dinner meal will be served at no cost to the members. Jose wants to see as many of us there as possible. If you are not an Aggie Park member please take this opportunity to join the S.A. Club. Details can be found at www.aggiepark.com.

Henry informed us tha he will be quoted in an article written by a Houston Chronicle reporter dealing with the Aggie Bonfire. Henry told us that he expressed his opinion that the University should not bring the 'Bonfire" back to TAMU and he gave his reasons. Jose expressed his opinion and said he disagreed. He felt that the Bonfire should return to Campus but at this time TAMU needs to concentrate on recruiting a President and 'cleaning' house, not on whether the Bonfire should return. This article will also be published in the S.A. Express-News. Be looking out for it.

Our next monthly mtg will be December 4th, 7am at the PSC.

In closing a reminder to please join us at Holmes H.S. tomorrow 11-3pm.
