SAN ANTONIO REGION MEETING NOTES, SEPTEMBER 4, 2009
Laurie Castillo, Polo Cervantes, Vangie Flores, Greg Garcia, Robert Gonzales, Ruben Guerrero, Anibal Gutierrez, Monica Gutierrez, Leonard Hernandez, Francisco Maldonado, Henry Ortega, Bob Perez, David Reta, and Jose Ventura attended the meeting at the PSC on Friday, 4 September 2009.
Greg Garcia announced the TAMHN Summit will be held on 10-11 September at College Station. So far, only 47 have registered for this very important event with the leadership of our alma mater. We need your participation, because we want to have at least 250 Hispanic Aggies attend.
Laurie Castillo announced the PSC will participate in Aggieland 101 by taking 40 lucky high school students who are interested in attending A&M to College Station on 18-20 September. This is the Utah State home football game weekend. Additionally, the PSC will have a student and parent's trip to A&M on 2 October. Twenty-five students and one of their parents will be invited.
Laurie also announced College Night Fairs begin in the San Antonio area on this date and will continue for a couple of weeks at various high schools.
Further, Laurie announced the PSC will host a monthly mixer at the PSC for prospective students and their parents. This will be a great opportunity for students and parents to ask questions and get answers about the application process. Snacks and beverages will be served. The time is from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM on the following dates: Tuesday, 8 September; Thursday, 15 October; Wednesday, 18 November; and Tuesday, 1 December. TAMHN members are invited to support these events with your presence.
Finally, Laurie announced the PSC will host Aggie Day at San Antonio at Holmes High School on Saturday, 7 November, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Members of TAMHN are invited to support the PSC and talk to prospective students and their parents about Texas A&M.
Jose Ventura announced TAMHN will hold a reception at Aggie Park on Thursday, 17 December, as a recruiting event for prospective students, as a welcome back home for the holidays event for current students, and a Christmas party event for TAMHN members. More details to follow.
Robert Gonzales reviewed his slide presentation on trends analysis in achieving the diversity goal of Imperative 6 of Vision 2020 that he will give at the Summit.
David Reta reminded all of us of the start of our only fund-raising drive of the year by selling tickets to the AT&T Golf Tournament on 23-25 October. The main way we raise sufficient funds to support our projects is to ask our entire membership for a donation to purchase tickets to this October event. Every dollar we sell will be returned to us. The more we sell, the more we get back. Additionally, the top three organizations in ticket sales will receive a bonus check of $5,000, $2500, or $1250. TAMHN has been fortunate to receive a bonus check the past three years. For example, in 2006 we received from AT&T an amount equal to our ticket sales ($2,100) plus a matching amount of $2,100 for a total of $4,200. We intensified our efforts in 2007 so that we could win a bigger "bonus" check. In addition to receiving back the $4,025 we sold in tickets, we also received an additional "bonus" amount of $5,000, because our organization sold the second highest amount of tickets. Consequently, we received a check for $9,025. Last year, although we raised more donations ($5,600), we finished third and received a smaller "bonus" amount ($2,500) for a total of $8,100. Because more organizations participate in ticket sales to this event each year, we estimate we need to sell at least $7,000 worth of tickets in order to have a chance for one of the bonus checks. Please help us sell tickets or purchase tickets as a contribution to our organization. Remember, very dollar will count for us. And every dollar we make is used to recruit Hispanic students to A&M. Please seriously consider setting aside at least a $50.00 donation for us and contact Vangie Flores at vanggf3@aol.com. This is a win-win situation for everybody. Your donation qualifies as a charitable contribution for tax purposes, could help us earn a "bonus" check, and goes entirely to support our Hispanic Aggie students. Please help us. Thanks in advance.
The Distinguished Alumni Gala is scheduled to Friday, 9 October at Texas A&M (evening before the Oklahoma State home football game) and the Association of Former Students has requested the TAMHN to sponsor a table for 10 persons for $1250.00. Anybody interested should contact Henry.
Another very important item not reported at our meeting, but provided by Alice Reinarz in the Admissions Office concerns Hispanic enrollment numbers in the A&M Class of 2013. On the first day of classes, 31 August, there were 8105 freshmen students. Of this number, 1401 or 17.3% are Hispanic. Both the 1401 and 17.3% figures are record highs. The previous highs were last year's 1327 and 16.3%. Last year was also a high for total freshmen - 8127. Official headcount numbers on taken on the 12th day of class, 15 September.
