SAN ANTONIO REGION MEETING NOTES, NOVEMBER 7, 2008
Howdy, Team. I want to first thank Karen (PSC) for reserving the conference room, preparing the coffee, and ensuring the tacos were available; THANKS KAREN! I believe we had a great meeting. Unfortunately, only eight of us were able to show. The meeting notes follow.
Those in attendance were: Jose Ventura, Bob Perez, Greg Garcia, Henry Ortega, Monica Gutierrez, Francisco Maldonado, Emil Moncivias, and Ricardo Gonzalez.
We started the meeting with a presentation by Jairo Razo. Jairo is an A&M student representing CAMAC. His primary mission this school year is to ensure CAMAC obtains the funds necessary to conduct the 2009 Student Conference on Latino Affairs (SCOLA). The 2009 SCOLA will be held April 3&4 at TAMU. Funding for SCOLA comes from ticket sales, donations, and exhibit table sponsorships.
The Team agreed with Jairo that there needed to be a closer relationship with not only CAMAC but the other student organizations on campus that address Hispanic, Latino, or Mexican-American issues/concerns. Francisco recommended and volunteered to be TAMHN-San Antonio's liason with these campus organizations. More on this at a later date.
The Team recommended TAMHN consider conducting the Annual Meeting at TAMU rather than in Houston or some other location. If we can and do move it we should ask all these organizations to join and provide us a briefing on their respective mission(s). We believe this will be a good way to close-out this year and begin the coming year. Henry agreed to pass this on to David and Enrique for their consideration. More to follow soon, I hope.
I believe the Team provided Jairo great ideas on how to go about securing funds and also recommended CAMAC look into increasing the fees for exhibit space/tables. Jairo, Requested TAMHN provide him a membership listing so CAMAC could contact them for financial support. We told him that we would look at the best way to accomplish this and would get back to him later.
Jose told him that TAMHN-San Antonio was willing to provide him with a donation but was not ready to commit an exact amount. Also he told Jairo that this was a good start and that we would continue to communicate in the future and ensure SCOLA will be extremely successful.
The PSC will soon start receiving the initial high school senior acceptance list. These are seniors who scored 1300 or higher on the SAT or 28 or higher on the ACT. We must be ready to volunteer to make calls and contact them soon after we recieve the list.
Team I need each and everyone of you to commit yourself to attend our monthly meetings and volunteer to contact potential FISH either by calling from home or joining us at the two or three Phone-A-Fish call nights from the PSC. REMEMBER this is our primary MISSION.
Our next meeting is scheduled for December 05, 2008. Also, I will keep you posted on the latest info about TAMHN's Annual Meeting. We are planning our Annual Holiday Party and I hope to send out a flyer later this month.
