SAN ANTONIO REGION MEETING NOTES, AUGUST 1, 2008
Texas A&M has 7892 confirmed freshmen this coming fall, meaning this is the number who indicated they will attend A&M. According to the New Student Conferences that have been held during the summer, 7117 of these 7892 have actually enrolled. There are a few more conferences scheduled this month before classes start on 25 August, so this 7117 number will go up.
Of the 7892 confirmed number, 1398 are Hispanic freshmen for 17.7% of the class. We hope this percentage holds true to and thru the first day of class. If it does, this will be the highest percentage of Hispanics in a freshman class at A&M ever. The previous high is 14.2%. Of the 1378 number, 215 are from the San Antonio area.
We, the TAMHN and the PCS, are hosting an Aggie Send-Off for the San Antonio area Hispanic freshmen and their families this coming Thursday, 7 August, at Aggie Park from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A free bar-b-q dinner will be served and a short program will be presented. If there is one event you want to support, this is the one. WE NEED YOU to be present and meet with these future Aggies and their parents, even if you can only be there for 30 minutes. The time you invest with these future students and their families will earn us dividends later in many ways. Please be there!
The TAMHN Summit is still scheduled for Houston on either 12 or 13 or both September. Details to follow.
David Reta will pick up an allotment of tickets to the AT&T Golf Tournament (24-26 October when A&M is playing at Iowa State) this coming week. These are $10.00 tickets for each day or a $25.00 ticket for the entire weekend. These tickets will regularly sell for $20.00 and $50.00, respectfully. As you know, our organization does not rely on or charge dues for membership. The main way we raise sufficient funds to support our projects is to ask our membership for a donation to purchase tickets to this October event. This may seem highly unusual, but the beauty of this tournament is that AT&T donates much of the proceeds to charitable organizations who help them with their ticket sales. For example, two years year we received an amount equal to our ticket sales back ($2,100) plus a matching amount of $2100 for a total of $4,200. We intensified our efforts this past year so that we could hopefully win a bigger "bonus" check. In addition to receiving back the $4,025 we sold in tickets, we also received an additional "bonus" amount of $5,000 because our organization sold the second highest amount of tickets. Consequently, we received a check for $9,025. The Child Guidance Center of San Antonio won first place and the Reagan High School Golf Team won third place. This year, AT&T will issue four bonus checks. First place will receive $15,000, second place will receive $5,000, third place will receive $2,500, and fourth place will receive $1,250. In order to continue to be competitive with other organizations for a "bonus" check, we will need more members to participate in this endeavor. Although our membership is over 80, fewer than 12 have participated the past two years. Please seriously consider setting aside at least a $50.00 donation for us. Your donation will allow us to contend for one of the four "bonus" checks from the AT&T tournament. This is a win-win situation for everybody. Your donation can more than double and every penny goes to support our Hispanic "fish." Thanks in advance.
