SAN ANTONIO REGION MEETING NOTES, JULY 6, 2007
Eleven members attended our July breakfast meeting this morning: Philip Campos, Laurie Castillo, Sandra Fernandez, Vangie Flores, Jesse Garza, Robert Gonzales, Monica Gutierrez, Leonard Hernandez, Bob Perez, David Reta, and Jose Ventura. The following items were discussed.
Ms. Laurie Castillo, the new Director of the Texas A&M Prospective Student Center (PSC) at San Antonio, replacing Marisol Scheer, join us for the first time. Linda graduated from Trinity and received her Masters from A&M. She previously was the Graduate Recruiter at Our Lady of the Lake College. She is anxious to work with us.
According to Jose and Sandra, the 2007 Aggie Summer Institute from 26-29 June at Palo Alto College was a complete success. This was the second year this workshop will be held and it was expanded to include 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. The sessions focused on preparing students for all aspects of college. Several of the volunteers were high school seniors who just graduated and who will be entering A&M this fall as freshmen.
We agreed to pay the fee for Fish Camp for a couple of Hispanic students to attend Session D in August.
The TAMHN Summit will be held at A&M on 13-14 September. This is the weekend of the Louisiana-Monroe home football game. There will be a $50.00 registration fee that will go towards a scholarship for a Hispanic student. The goal for the San Antonio region of TAMHN is 50. I know with your support, we will have no problem meeting this goal. This is the time for all good Hispanic graduates of Texas A&M to gather on campus to demonstrate our strength and interest to the continued progress our alma mater is making towards greater diversity in the student body. In connection with this meeting, please check the attached roster and confirm your mailing and telephone numbers with Robert. Thanks.
Please circle Sunday afternoon, 29 July. We are planning a pre-Summit bar-b-q at Vangie Flores home. This will be a super opportunity to meet and greet all new members or to meet with those who have been unable to attend the monthly meetings.
Here is the latest news from A&M on Hispanic numbers, including those who were accepted off of the wait list for this falls entering freshman class. A final total 2323 Hispanic students were sent acceptance letters by A&M. This is an increase of 200 over last year's acceptance numbers. A&M thought this 2323 number would yield around 1250 (53.8%) confirms, which would meet TAMHN's goal of 1250 Hispanic freshmen for this fall. However, only 1210 (52.1%) have confirmed for A&M, which is an increase of only 47 over last year's numbers at this same time. Please keep in mind that the current confirm number (1210) will decrease by 4-5% by the time fall classes start. This means we can expect the freshman Hispanic number on the first day of class to be closer to 1156, which will be an increase of only 50 over last year's first day class number of 1106. By the time the 12th day of class rolls around (the official count day), we may lose a few more. We lost 9 last year so that the official number was finally 1097.
Overall A&M has 8398 confirms for the entire entering freshman class, which will be the largest freshman class ever at A&M. 1210 represents 14.4%, which is an improvement of .3% over last year's 14.1%.
Remember that just 10 years ago in 1997, A&M had only 607 Hispanic freshmen on the 12th day of class. Five years later in 2001, it was up to 674, an increase of only 67. Compared to the last five entering freshman classes (2002-2006), much progress has been made to where there were 423 more Hispanic freshmen in 2006 (1097) than there were in 2001, which is a tremendous improve in the diversity of the student body at A&M.
A&M will present the final numbers for our Summit in September and they will be looking for suggestions from us for further improvement.
TEAM, I hope to see many more of you at our July 29 bar-b-q and at our next meeting on August 3, 2007. I know it is difficult to make the meetings each month, but I ask you to try a little harder. Thank you!
