SAN ANTONIO REGION MEETING NOTES, JUNE 1, 2007
Seven members attended our June meeting: Sandra Fernandez, Jesse Garza, Robert Gonzales, Monica Gutierrez, Henry Ortega, Ismael Rodriguez, and Jose Ventura. The following items were discussed.

Ms. Laurie Castillo has been selected as the new Director of the Texas A&M Prospective Student Center (PSC) at San Antonio, replacing Marisol Scheer. Linda graduated from Trinity and received her Master’s from A&M. She previously was the Graduate Recruiter at Our Lady of the Lake College. Her first official day in the office will be 25 June, after several days of training days at A&M.

Passport to Aggieland (college application workshop) program will be held 13-14 June at Texas A&M. Twenty (20) local high school students of diverse backgrounds plus ten (10) from Laredo have registered and will attend. All students are in the top 10% of their class.

A reminder from last month’s minutes, the local PSC office will host the 2007 Aggie Summer Institute from 26-29 June at Palo Alto College from 8:00 AM to 4 PM each day. This is the second year this workshop will be held and it has been expanded to include 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. There’s a limit of 30 students per each grade and each grade has just about reached its limit. The sessions will focus on preparing students for all aspects of college. On the last day of the program, all 12th graders will be taken to the main campus at College Station where they will join students from other PSC locations and be eligible for several $1,000.00 scholarships.

The PSC is still in need of adult volunteers to serve as presenters, chaperons, mentors, and even errand-runners. They have 15 and need 40 more to volunteer for at least a half day. Volunteers need to take a one hour training class and be prepared to serve a minimum of four additional hours in some capacity. If interested, please go to a minimum of four additional hours in some capacity. If interested, either as a volunteer or student, please go to https://financialaid.tamu.edu/asi to register.

The TAMHN Summit will be held at A&M on 13-15 September. This is the weekend of the Louisiana-Monroe home football game at 6:00 PM.

I was asked to retransmit the following information on the Hispanic numbers pertaining to applications, admits, and confirmed acceptance. A&M received 18, 726 completed applications for the entering freshman class. A&M sent admit letters to 12, 771 applicants. 7,341 confirmed their acceptance of admission to A&M. Of these figures, the Hispanic equivalent numbers were 3,082 completed applications (up from 2889 last year), 2,136 admit letters (up from 1952 last year), and 1,073 confirmed (up from 1070 last year). In the San Antonio area, 1,372 applied to A&M, 901 received admit letters, and 543 confirmed for A&M. Of these San Antonio figures, 481 Hispanic students applied (down from 484 last year), 305 received admit letters (down from 318 last year), and 161 confirmed for A&M (down from 175 last year). A&M is going thru its “wait list” right now in the hopes of arriving at a confirmed number of 7,500. This means there’s room for increasing the overall Hispanic confirmed numbers. Last year’s freshman class totaled 7,799, with 1,097 being Hispanic for 14.1%. Although the current numbers are lower than last year’s final numbers, Hispanics compose 14.6% of the current confirmed numbers. It would be nice to get at least 75 additional Hispanics off of the “Waiting List” to confirm.

We hope to have updated numbers at our next meeting that will reflect the additions from the “Wait List.” Students had until last Friday to accept A&M’s offer of admissions.

TEAM, I hope to see many more of you at our July 06, 2007 meeting. I know it is difficult to make the meetings each month, but I ask you to try a little harder. Thank you!
