SAN ANTONIO REGION MEETING NOTES, May 4, 2007
Eight members attended our meeting: Jennifer Aguilar, Marc Garza, Robert Gonzales, Henry Ortega, Bob Perez, David Reta, Marisol Scheer, and Jose Ventura.
The local PSC office will host the 2007 Aggie Summer Institute from 26-29 June at Palo Alto College from 8:00 AM to 4 PM each day. This is the second year this workshop will be held and it has been expanded to include 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. There’s a limit of 30 students per each grade. The sessions will focus on preparing students for all aspects of college. On the last day of the program, all 12th graders will be taken to the main campus at College Station where they will join students from other PSC locations and be eligible for several $1,000.00 scholarships. Why am I telling you this? For two reasons. First, we need volunteers to serve as presenters, chaperons, mentors, and even errand-runners. Second, we want to encourage any 7th thru 12th grader you know to sign up for this program. The course is FREE! Volunteers need to take a one hour training class and be prepared to serve a minimum of four additional hours in some capacity. If interested, either as a volunteer or student, please go to https://financialaid.tamu.edu/asi to register.
There may be some “provisional” students who enter A&M in the summer session at the end of this month who need financial assistance to get through the summer. Any scholarship money they nay receive upon successful completion of summer school, does not kick in until the fall semester. Janie Guajardo will inform me about these needs to see if TAMHN-SA can assist them.
The TAMHN Summit will be held at A&M on 13-15 September. This is the weekend of the Louisiana-Monroe home football game at 6:00 PM.
Marisol Scheer provided the following numbers pertaining to applications, admits, and confirmed acceptance. A&M received 18,726 completed applications for the entering freshman class. A&M sent admit letters to 12,771 applicants. 7,341 confirmed their acceptance of admission to A&M. Of these figures, the Hispanic equivalent numbers were 3,082 completed applications (up from 2889 last year), 2,136 admit letters (up from 1952 last year), and 1,073 confirmed (up from 1070 last year). In the San Antonio area, 1,372 applied to A&M, 901 received admit letters, and 543 confirmed for A&M. Of these San Antonio figures, 481 Hispanic students applied (down from 484 last year), 305 received admit letters (down from 318 last year), and 161 confirmed for A&M (down from 175 last year). A&M is going thru its “wait list” right now in the hopes of arriving at a confirmed number of 7,500. This means there’s room for increasing the overall Hispanic confirmed numbers. Last year’s freshman class totaled 7,799, with 1,097 being Hispanic for 14.1%. Although the current numbers are lower than last year’s final numbers, Hispanics compose 14.6% of the current confirmed numbers. It would be nice to get at least 75 additional Hispanics off of the “waiting list” to confirm.
